What is an in-person audition? Everything you need to know before your audition

Sabes qué se hace en un casting

If you’re taking your first steps into the world of acting or modelling, you’ve probably come across the term “in-person casting”. But what does it actually mean, and how should you prepare?

In this article, we break down the key points so you can go to your next appointment feeling completely safe and confident.

What exactly is an in-person casting?

Unlike “self-tapes” (where you film yourself at home), an in-person casting is an audition held in person.

This is the moment when you physically go to a specific location – be it a production office, a photography studio or a rehearsal room – to showcase your talent directly to the casting team. It’s your chance for them to see you ‘in the flesh’, get a feel for your energy and see how you perform in a professional setting.

Step by step: What happens inside the room?

We know that nerves can get the better of you, which is why understanding how the process works will help you stay calm. These are the usual steps:

  • Arrival: You must go to the location specified on your appointment letter. It is essential to be punctual; arriving a few minutes early will give you time to settle in.
  • The introduction: Once you are in front of the camera or the panel, you will be asked to state your name and some basic details (age, height, agency, etc.). This is commonly referred to as “introductions”.
  • The performance: Now is your chance to shine. You will need to perform the scene or piece of acting that you were asked to prepare in advance. Sometimes, if there is no script, you may be asked to do a short improvisation.
  • Feedback and instructions: Don’t panic if they ask you to do the take again or give you different instructions (for example: “make it more upbeat” or “slow it down”). This is a great sign; it means they want to see your ability to take direction and your versatility.

Quick tips for success

Remember: The casting team wants you to do well. They’re looking for the ideal candidate, and they want that to be you.

  • Put your best foot forward: A positive attitude and friendliness count just as much as talent.
  • Dress appropriately: Unless you are given specific instructions, wear comfortable clothes that do not distract from your face and your performance.
  • Be prepared, but stay flexible: Learn your lines by heart, but keep an open mind about changing your approach if the director asks you to do so on the spot.
